The episode, now available on streaming platforms, offers an exclusive and captivating look into Barbados’ rich rum-making tradition, celebrating the unparalleled craftsmanship and founding heritage of Mount Gay.


Established in 1703 and crowning Barbados as the world’s birthplace of rum, Mount Gay has been at the forefront of rum production, maintaining its title as the oldest running rum distillery in the world, located on historical ground at its Distillery in St. Lucy, the most septentrional Parish of Barbados. Poured into film in the second episode of the series, Drink explores Mount Gay’s centuries-old heritage, from its founding roots to its continued innovation in the art of distillation. Through the lens of Drink, viewers gain exclusive behind-the-scenes access at Mount Gay. From meeting the people and hands that make the spirit, to witnessing the meticulous process that has defined Mount Gay’s award-winning and internationally loved
rums for over 320 years.

Unveiling the simplicity of Mount Gay’s three ingredients, viewers are taken on an age-old journey through Caribbean time and culture. Discover up close the traditional double copper pot and copper column stills that distil the world’s favourite rums, from the category-defining Mount Gay XO, enjoyed around the world for more than 30 years, to the iconic Eclipse, the signature addition to any cocktail, whose recipe in more than a century old.

On historic land and at the Mount Gay Estate, the series highlights the brand’s dedication to sustainable practices, from soil to sip, underscoring its vision of environmental stewardship and carbon neutrality.

A special focus is given to our limited edition Single Estate Series. Launched at the end of 2023, this series celebrates the unique terroir of Barbados, spotlighting the Mount Gay Estate’s sugar canes harvested, processed and distilled on-site. Mount Gay’s Single Estate Series is a testament to the distillery’s commitment to showcasing the exceptional qualities of its local ingredients, a process meticulously overseen by Master Blender Trudiann Branker, Barbados’ first female Master Blender.

The documentary, created by three Canadian brothers, marks a pioneering first in the world of drinks and entertainment. The Freeman Brothers and Co-creator filmmakers, shared their sentiments on the release, where Brad Freeman, said “Creating the show felt like a dream, allowing us to combine traditional documentary style with modern cinematic techniques for a true adventure”. Ryan Freeman added, “We wanted viewers to feel immersed in each location, which is why we filmed in 8K and used wide-angle lenses and 360 audio to capture every detail… we hope the show inspires curiosity and exploration, letting people experience different cultures and places from their own homes.”

Over four years in the making, ‘Drink: A Look Inside the Glass’ involved more than 100 contributors, featuring 46 interviews filmed across six countries. Each episode took approximately 14 days to shoot, with four months of pre-production, reflecting the team’s dedication to crafting a show with a lasting impact.
