Notes from the farm team:

‘In 2024, the island’s harvest started late in comparison to the ideal mid-February start. It began in late March and Mount Gay’s harvest started in mid- June. The team harvested all the sugar cane over an 8-week period. Several delays were experienced particularly due to intermittent heavy rainfall and passing weather systems including Hurricane Beryl. Harvest concluded just after the close of the Crop Over season. There was a mixture of sunny and rainy weather conditions. Hurricane Beryl brought heavy showers and flooding to the island which delayed harvesting. Heavy rains at the beginning of August also resulted in another delay in harvesting. Despite the various setbacks and challenges, the team was able to overcome and complete another year’s harvest.’

‘The 2024 harvest will be remembered as a long and challenging one. From mechanical breakdowns to the disruptive force of Hurricane Beryl, the season tested both our patience and resilience. Yet, despite the obstacles, we pushed through together as a team, ensuring that every cane harvested reached the Mill. It wasn’t always smooth, but it was a true demonstration of dedication and commitment to the Estate. Looking back, I feel proud knowing that even in a difficult year, we remained steadfast in our mission to carry the legacy of Mount Gay forward.

This year’s harvest was real learning experience for me. I had the chance to see the cane harvesters in action up close. Watching the process unfold was an eye-opening experience, and it gave me a real sense of accomplishment knowing that my part in the harvest helps create the exceptional rum Mount Gay is known for.

FERMENTATION

Yeast
type

Proprietary yeast cultivated from the Mount Gay Estate.

Fermentation
length

9 days.

Fermentation
characteristics

Very long fermentation (9 days vs. our standard 4 days) which led to a secondary fermentation and provided a really distinctive flavour giving specific Barbadian notes like white rose and grapefruit.

‘Due to long fermentation length we went into a secondary fermentation, which provided a really distinctive flavour, giving specific Barbadian notes that we don’t normally encounter in our rums, like white rose and grapefruit. You really get the fruitier side of the congeners appearing.’

SES 25_03 is a single batch rum

Unlike our other rums, Single Estate Series 25_03 was produced from the same batch and distilled on the copper Coffey Still. This rum has never been blended with another liquid, which is quite exceptional at Mount Gay.

‘Barbados, with its unique climate and terroir, plays a crucial role in shaping the character of our rums. The warm, tropical environment facilitates a faster and more interactive ageing process compared to cooler climates. This tropical aging results in rums with richer, more complex flavour profiles.’

“Single Estate is a sipping rum, and it is at level of alcohol that offers a beautiful balance between power and elegance, intensity and finesse of the aromas… it is an invitation to discover the many layers of flavours that come from our Estate canes. Personally, after a few sips, I recommend to add a drop of spring water and you will notice new hints coming up… it is a beautiful journey.”
