Mount Gay is a rum with deep connections to our oceans, spanning our 300-year history. Our oceans are the tie that connect our heritage, our island geography, and the relationship to our sailing community.
Founded on the island Barbados, the birthplace of rum, Mount Gay is proud to be the oldest running rum distillery in the world. It is the unique terroir of Barbados, from the sugarcane and coral filtered water used in our blends, to the island breeze and tropical climate that ages our rums, that imbues Mount Gay with its singular taste.
While it was over three centuries ago that sailors battled rough waters to reach the island of Barbados, bringing barrels of Mount Gay Rum back from their travels as proof of their successful journey, our unbreakable bond with sailing perseveres. Today, we are the proud sponsor of over 60 regattas around the USA and our iconic, highly sought-after red caps have become a symbol of one’s sailing passions.
Mount Gay aims to support the world’s oceans that have shaped our history and that are so important to our sailing community. We have a multifaceted sustainability program across environmental, agricultural, and community initiatives, with the goal to be employing 100% sustainable agriculture by 2025.
In addition to our own initiatives on the island of Barbados, Mount Gay is partnering with 4ocean in support of their mission to clean the world’s oceans and coastlines and put an end to the ocean plastic crisis. Throughout 2021, we will be working to drive revenue to support their ocean clean up endeavors; supporting their important beach clean efforts; and educating our own community of Mount Gay team-members, bartenders, and drinkers on how to both ‘think sustainably and drink sustainably’.
4ocean is a purpose-driven business with a mission to end the ocean plastic crisis. They do this by directly cleaning the ocean, rivers and coastlines and stopping the inflow of plastic by changing consumption habits on land. As a Certified B Corp and Public Benefit Corporation, 4ocean was founded on the belief that business can be a force for good and that the actions of individual people, collectively, have the power to change the world. To date, their full-time professional cleanup crew members have recovered over 13 million pounds of trash.
